This study re-evaluates the life and activities of Abbé Bérenger Saunière of Rennes-le-Château by integrating four strands of evidence: his surviving account books and correspondence, architectural interventions within the church, oral testimonies preserved locally, and modern historical/archival research. Contrary to polarized narratives—either that Saunière discovered a fabulous treasure or that he became wealthy solely through mass trafficking—the evidence supports a more nuanced, two-phase model.
